Presents Cantinas de Santa Maria – A musical Jouney

September 18 - 20, 2025

As legend has it, the Cantigas de Santa Maria were written by Alfonso as a result of his healing by the Virgin Mary. He then dedicated his life to being her troubador, writing four hundred and twenty-seven songs that come down to four lavish volumes.

The music of the cantigas can be hypnotic, with quirky, offbeat rhythms. Musica Universalis will accompany the songs with instruments that are modeled on the ones you would see in the time of Alphonso X: vielle, bagpipe, cymbalom, recorders, percussion, gemshorns, and voices.

Musica Universalis welcomes two guest artists: recorder virtuosos Cléa Galhano and Portland soprano and arts activist Madeline Ross. We will sing, play, and tell stories of these magnificent songs with a little audience participation thrown in for more merriment!
