Doors: 6 pm
Artist Website: Duncan Berry
Do you like fish? Do you like art? Well, then we have an event for you!
If you have been to the shop, then you have no doubt seen the fish prints on the wall next to the door. These prints are a particular form of art known as Gyotaku, and we want to share it with you!
One of our company’s founders, Duncan Berry, is a well-respected Gyotaku artist and we have arranged for him to come and conduct a Gyotaku printing workshop, where you get to make your very own prints! This direct style of printing is hands-on, just like they used to do in the 1800s. The theme will be “Art of the River & Sea.”
This workshop will be a deep dive into the world of the wild creatures found in the Columbia River and along Oregon’s coastlines. Take direct impressions from Salmon, Octopus, Rock Fish, Dungeness Crab, Sea Stars, and more. Hear about the secret lives of many of these fascinating creatures while you print. No previous experience is needed. Everyone will complete 5 or more pieces of art to take home.
"Gyotaku or “Fish-rubbing” originated as Japanese folk art in the 18th century. I have brought this craft into the modern-day by printing sea and river creatures found here in the PNW, inking the actual surface of the specimen and making a direct print onto archival Mulberry paper."
Duncan’s work is featured in museums, aquariums, hotels, restaurants, private collections, permanent & traveling exhibitions, a wide range of publications, and select art galleries.
Hors d'oeuvres, wine, and beer will be served. This is a small event and space is limited.
