Say Anything - Crowe’s directorial debut cemented his reputation as a heart-on-the-sleeve auteur capable of elevating universal rites of passage into dynamically charged celebrations of the highs and lows of growing up. High school senior Lloyd Dobbler (John Cusack) is an idealistic, but unfocused dreamer who subverts the pecking order by courting Diane (Ione Skye), the smartest, most unattainable girl at his school. As post-graduation life looms large over their budding relationship, Diane’s family life is called into jeopardy and their future becomes uncertain. Featuring the most iconic use of a boom box this side of Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing, Say Anything is a clear-eyed interrogation of what the first flush of love feels like when it flies in the face of the stark realities of adulthood. “A movie like this is possible because its maker believes in the young characters, and in doing the right thing, and in staying true to oneself.” – Roger Ebert
