An evening of Spanish and Latin fiery, sensuous, jazz-flavored playing by internationally acclaimed Peruvian classical guitarist Alfredo Muro. On Saturday, September 29 at 7:30 pm, “Dialogues for Guitar & Cello”, with special guest Canadian cellist Valdine Ritchie Mishkin. Don’t miss the magic when they perform at Classic Pianos of Portland.

Muro’s program features pieces by Celedonio Romero, Isaac Albeniz, Ernesto Nazareth, Astor Piazzolla, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Baden Powell, Bach and other great Latin composers. Muro’s virtuosity spans many eras and musical traditions but he is especially noted for his sophisticated interpretations of the modern Latin guitar repertoire. Born in Peru, Muro began teaching himself guitar at the age of nine and won a national prize three years later. Through the years he has performed throughout the Americas,as well as in Europe and Asia. He was the featured artist at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. for the Millennium Center Series in 2007, and he performed at a special audience for the late Pope John Paul II at the Vatican. Muro is a gifted arranger and composer and has released many CD recordings of his own and other artists works.

Canadian Cellist Valdine Ritchie Mishkin is a diverse musician, recognized as a gifted cello teacher and an avid solo, chamber, and orchestral musician. Valdine champions contemporary music with Third Angle, Fear No Music, and March Modern, recently featured live on All-Classical FM Portland’s Club Mod and Thursdays at Three, as well as “the classics” with the passionate Crescendo Project piano trio, and formerly with Houston’s Mercury Ensemble on baroque cello. Valdine is a regular extra cellist with the Oregon Symphony and a sectional coach with the Portland and Salem Youth Symphonies. Debuting at age 10 as a soloist with the Winnipeg Symphony, Valdine has since performed concerti with the Mercury Ensemble, Chehalem Symphony, Chamber Camp of Portland, McGill Symphony, and the Winnipeg Youth Symphony.

Equally dedicated to teaching the youngest students in early education as well as training advanced cellists, Dr. Mishkin serves on the faculty at Willamette University and teaches a bustling studio of cellists in West Linn, presents at conferences, adjudicates regional and national festivals, and serves on the Oregon Cello Society and Oregon ASTA boards. Valdine received her Doctorate and Masters degrees from Rice University as a student of Lynn Harrell and Norman Fischer, Bachelor degree from McGill University (Montreal, Canada) as a student of Antonio Lysy, and holds both Associate Performance Diplomas and pedagogy certificates in both cello and piano from the Royal Conservatory of Toronto.
