Live Piano Score composed and performed by Beth Karp!

According to legend, a 16th century rabbi brought to life a giant clay automaton in order to protect the Jews of Prague from persecution. This golem was animated by occult forces almost beyond human control, creating the potential for great triumph or tragedy. Paul Wegener’s 1920 film, The Golem, retells the legend in a grand and atmospheric tour de force.

Bio

Beth Karp is a composer and pianist based in Portland, Oregon. She serves on the faculty at Portland Community College and directs the Portland Music Collective, as well as maintaining an active performing schedule as a collaborative and solo artist.

Beth has a special passion for silent film accompaniment. She has performed her original piano score for the 1920 film "The Golem" at the Alberta Rose Theatre, Whiteside Theatre, Mittleman Jewish Community Center, and the University of Oregon. She is currently developing a second full-length program, consisting of silent film shorts from the dawn of cinema, when directors' imaginations ran wild as they experimented with narrative and technique.

Beth holds an MM in Composition from the Longy School of Music, where she received a Composition and Theory department fellowship and the Nadia and Lili Boulanger scholarship. She holds a BA in Music, cum laude with Distinction in All Subjects, from Cornell University, where she studied composition with Steven Stucky and Roberto Sierra.
