The collaboration between Argyle Winery and PDX Jazz returns for another summer evening of exceptional music and wine. On August 1, the Dundee Tasting House plays host to one of the most compelling partnerships in contemporary jazz: guitarist Mary Halvorson and drummer Tomas Fujiwara, performing as a duo.

A MacArthur Fellow and multiple Downbeat Critics Poll honoree, Mary Halvorson has spent two decades reshaping what the guitar can do in an improvised context. Her most recent album, Cloudward (Nonesuch Records, 2024), drew widespread critical acclaim — and her collaborators over the years read like a who's who of creative music: Anthony Braxton, Bill Frisell, John Zorn, Laurie Anderson, and many more. Brooklyn-based drummer Tomas Fujiwara brings the same restless intelligence to the drum set — the New York Times described his playing as treating rhythm as a "pliable substance, solid but ever shifting."

The two first met in New York in the early 2000s and have been each other's most consistent collaborators ever since, working together in Thumbscrew, Code Girl, Triple Double, and dozens of other projects. Their duo showcases a new book of music built on that history — stripped down, deeply conversational, and unlike anything else you'll hear this summer.
