Tony Starlight
"Tony Starlight vs Jazz"

Friday, May 20th 2016
One show at 8pm

Tony Starlight’s reputation as Portland’s leading lounge lizard was earned largely on stage during the early days of Jimmy Mak’s, nearly 20 years ago. Since then Tony spent some time in LA before returning to Portland in 2007, opening his own venue and becoming Portland’s leading musical comedian. Tony performs throughout the region as a featured entertainer and master of ceremony.

Tony Starlight vs. Jazz  For this special show, Tony returns to his form as a lounge singer singing some of his favorite nightclub style arrangements like “The Lady Is A Tramp”, “More” and more. He’ll also dust off some Starlight classics like “The Girl With Emphysema” and “My Hair Keeps a-Fallin’ From My Head”. Most importantly Tony will confront jazz head-on with comedic monologues and ask such important questions about jazz like:

What exactly is “jazz face” and is there a cure?

How can this be jazz? People are listening.

Do I still have to clap after a bass solo?

Should the state require a license to “scat”?

As Jimmy Mak’s makes plans to move their location this Fall, this show will serve as a nostalgic stroll down memory lane, with recollections of the early days of the great jazz club.

Who will win this epic battle? Tony Starlight or Jazz?

Tony is joined by The Matt Tabor Quintet, stocked full of top notch jazz musicians. Matt Tabor, piano  Brett McConnell, bass  Nick O’Donnell, guitar  Toby Reuter-Harrah, drums and Paul Mazzio, trumpet
