SINGING BRUBECK: KARLA HARRIS BRINGS RARE VOCAL VERSIONS OF DAVE BRUBECK CLASSICS TO JIMMY MAK’S

Jazz vocalist Karla Harris takes center stage at Jimmy Mak’s in support of her Summit Records release, “Karla Harris Sings the Dave and Iola Brubeck Songbook,” the first-ever studio recording featuring the iconic pianist’s music with rarely heard lyrics written by his wife of 70 years, Iola Brubeck.

Harris is a former Portland resident who gained a strong presence during her years on the city’s jazz scene, including performances at the Cathedral Park Jazz festival, the Portland Jazz Festival, and the Newport Jazz Party.

“The jazz fans and musicians in Portland have a special place in my heart, and I’m thrilled to be coming to Jimmy’s, one of my favorite places, with this music,” Harris says. “It’s a sophisticated and dynamic program that gives me the chance to share some of the stories behind the tunes, too. Portland jazz listeners are so wonderful and tuned-in – I think they will love this show!

Joining Harris will be L.A-based pianist, composer and arranger Ted Howe, who produced the CD. The band will also include bassist Damian Erskine, drummer Mark Griffith, alto sax player Tim Jensen and featured appearances by guest artists such as Torres.

“Karla Harris Sings the Dave and Iola Brubeck Songbook” reached Jazz Times chart-bound status this spring. A recent review in Jazziz magazine says, “Harris’ powerful, flexible voice suits the often-complex material. … [She] brings out the beauty in lyrics to a ballad version of ‘In Your Own Sweet Way,’ to a haunting read of ‘There’ll Be No Tomorrow,’ and to a swinging take on ‘My One Bad Habit.’ The Brubecks would have been pleased.”
